The New Culture Movement

      1915-1919, 1919-1923

The New Culture Movement happened between 1915 to 1919 and 1919 to 1923 was led by Chinese scholars Duxiu Chen, Shi Hu, Dazhao Li etc.. They were people who accepted Western advanced education and aimed to change the old China by spreading their ideology and knowledge. At that time, the old China had been ruled under feudality for over thousands of years, Chinese were restricted by our traditional ideology. Thus, Mr. Chen and other scholars utilized their pens as the key to open Chinese's mind and look for opportunities.

During that time, China was under the pressure of inner corrupt government and foreign imperialist aggression, so the New Culture Movement turned from a culture movement to be more political. Or, we can say that culture, economics and politics were always complementary at the age. Also, their extreme attitude towards Chinese traditional culture made the movement be limited.

This is an unsuccessful ideological liberation movement, but it is truly the foundation of enlightened Chinese and of New China. In other words, the New Culture Movement is the essential and necessary path that China must pass to be updated.  Learn More...
